ESD Compliance & Standards

How do Treston workstations ensure ESD protection?

Treston offers a full range of ESD-safe workstations under the ESD Proof by Design™ concept. These solutions are built from the ground up to prevent electrostatic discharge and protect sensitive components in EPA environments. Key features include:

  • Integrated ESD protection: ESD safety is built into the structure of the workstation—not added as an afterthought—ensuring consistent and reliable protection.
  • Conductive materials and coatings: Surfaces are finished with ESD powder-coated paint and ESD-laminates, allowing static charges to dissipate safely.
  • Effective grounding: All ESD workstations include grounding components that enable a controlled discharge path for static electricity.
  • Standards compliance: Treston’s ESD solutions meet international standards including IEC 61340-5-1, IEC 61340-6-1, and ANSI/ESD S20.20.
  • Long-term reliability: Backed by over 40 years of experience in ESD solutions and a 10-year warranty, Treston workstations are a trusted choice for demanding environments.

How do I ground a Treston ESD workbench?

Treston provides two ESD-grounding options, depending on the workbench model and EPA setup:

  • Wired grounding: The workbench is grounded with a cord directly to the common point grounding (CPG), typically using a grounding cord.
  • Wireless grounding: The workbench is grounded through its conductive ESD paint simply by placing it on a compliant ESD floor—no separate grounding cord is needed.

What ESD standards do Treston workstations comply with?

Treston ESD workstations comply with ANSI S20.20, IEC 61340-5-1, and IEC 61340-5-2 standards. These standards define the requirements for preventing electrostatic discharge in EPA (ESD Protected Area) environments. Treston's ESD solutions are designed and tested to meet these international guidelines for safety, grounding, and material performance.

ESD certificates are available upon request—customers can contact Treston to receive documentation related to product compliance.

What is the painting process used for Treston ESD products?
Treston ESD products are finished using a powder coating process. A special ESD paint is applied to the surfaces to ensure semi-conductive properties. This coating allows static electricity to dissipate safely when the product is properly grounded, making it suitable for use in EPA environments.
What industries benefit most from ESD-safe furniture?
Industries that handle sensitive electronic components benefit most from ESD-safe furniture. This includes electronics manufacturing, assembly, and repair; semiconductor and PCB production; medical device manufacturing; aerospace; the defence industry; automotive electronics; and cleanroom environments. ESD-safe furniture helps prevent electrostatic discharge that could damage components, disrupt processes, or compromise product quality.
How do I test that my ESD workstation is functioning correctly?

The most effective way to test an ESD workstation is by measuring the surface resistance of the workbench and related components.

Use an ESD surface resistance meter to verify that resistance values are within the acceptable range—typically between 1×10⁶ and 1×10⁹ ohms for ESD work surfaces, as defined by standards like IEC 61340-5-1 and ANSI/ESD S20.20. Testing should also include grounding points to ensure proper dissipation of static electricity.

Regular resistance checks help maintain compliance and ensure ongoing protection of sensitive electronics.

Read our whitepaper on measuring ESD for more detailed guidance

Is maintenance required for ESD surfaces?

Yes, regular maintenance is important to ensure ESD surfaces continue to perform effectively. ESD surfaces should be cleaned with approved ESD-safe cleaners that do not leave insulating residues. Avoid using standard household cleaners, as they can reduce the surface’s conductivity. Periodic testing of surface resistance is also recommended to ensure continued compliance with ESD standards.
